Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that round pine wood prices increased sharply from 91 USD/m3 in early 2021 to 139 USD/m3 in February 2022; By March 2022, the price continues to increase by 12 USD/m3 compared to the previous month. Thus, in just the first 3 months of 2022, the price of imported round pine wood has increased by 52% compared to the same period last year. The price of imported wood materials is fluctuating greatly, causing negative impacts on Vietnam’s wood industry.
The price of imported wood materials is facing a big “wave”.
Therefore, the price of imported wood materials or the development of raw material areas has become more urgent, requiring breakthrough changes in mechanisms, policies and actions of businesses.
According to Mr. Do Xuan Lap – Chairman of Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association, in the first quarter of 2022, our country imported about 1.2 million m3 of raw wood from 84 markets, down 27% compared to the same period in 2021. However, the price of imported wood materials has increased.

Mr. To Xuan Phuc – expert from Forest Trend Organization – commented that aspects of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the supply of raw wood include creating a shortage of empty containers, increasing shipping costs, causing a shortage of labor in the exploitation stage. Scarcity of raw wood, increased wood prices, and uncertain delivery times have directly impacted Vietnam’s imported wood supply. This is also reducing the industry’s competitive advantage.
Wood raw materials usually account for 40 – 60% of the product cost structure of a wood product. Therefore, ensuring a stable and sustainable source of wood raw materials is one of the prerequisites for the development of the industry. Proactive domestic wood supply has also been implemented by businesses.
Ms. Do Thi Bach Tuyet – Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Woodsland Tuyen Quang Joint Stock Company – said that building a large wood plantation area is the goal and strategy of Woodsland. The company has coordinated with certificate holders including forestry companies and household groups to develop a forest management plan for at least 7 years in the forest management plan to create wood material areas to meet demand. Processing.
However, businesses also face many difficulties in developing domestic planted wood material areas because of the short time.
In addition, the development of large timber forests has not received much attention from people because of the long cycle of plantation forests and great risks due to dependence on weather, seasons, and people’s economic conditions, especially in remote areas. Remote areas still have many difficulties and do not have enough financial conditions to follow long exploitation cycles to produce large timber.
As one of the furniture capitals of the country, currently, Binh Dinh’s wood and forest products processing industry has about 240 processing enterprises. Mr. Nguyen Tuan Thanh – Permanent Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People’s Committee – said that the current source of raw materials in the province can only supply 50%. Planting large timber forests to meet the domestic raw material supply is also very difficult because it requires a long time of 10 – 15 years. This requires breakthrough changes in mechanisms, policies and actions of businesses in promoting linkages between parties.
Currently, the source of planted forest wood only meets 60-65% of demand for both domestic and export use. In order to create a source of wood from planted forests to ensure sustainable development of wood production and processing, Mr. Do Xuan Lap said that it is necessary to take advantage of afforestation of all existing land funds and even poor land areas. ineffective forest areas; Increase afforestation efficiency…
